Schengen Visa for Indians: Applying from Chennai

One visa, twenty-nine countries, ninety days in any one-eighty. That part most people know. What catches Chennai applicants out is everything around it — which country to apply to, how far ahead to start, and whether they already qualify for a visa far longer than the one they are about to request.

Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa. ETIAS, which you may have read about, is for visa-free nationalities and does not apply to us.

Which country do you apply to?

Get this wrong and your file can be rejected before anyone assesses it.

The rule is main destination — apply to the country where you will spend the most nights. If the nights are equal across two or more countries, apply to the country you enter first.

Where this bites is an itinerary that changes after the appointment is booked. Drop two nights in Rome and add them to Vienna, and your main destination may have quietly moved to Austria. We check the itinerary against the booking before the appointment, not after.

The longer visa many Indians already qualify for

This is the part almost nobody in Chennai will tell you about.

Since April 2024 the EU has applied a cascade regime for Indian nationals applying in India. If you have obtained and lawfully used two Schengen visas within the previous three years, you are normally eligible for a multi-entry visa valid for two years — usually followed by a five-year visa, provided your passport has enough validity left. Terms are set by the consulate you apply to, and we confirm the current ones before you file.

“Lawfully used” matters: entered and left within the permitted dates, no overstays. During the validity you travel much as a visa-free national would, still within the 90-in-180 limit.

If you go to Europe for work every year, or visit family regularly, you may be requesting a two-week single-entry visa when you could ask for five years. We check your passport history at the assessment. Consulates apply the cascade at their discretion, so it is not automatic — but you cannot receive it if you never ask.

Where you apply from Chennai

Each Schengen country decides which centre handles applications from Tamil Nadu, and it differs by country. Some are submitted at the visa application centre here in Chennai; for others the nearest is Bengaluru, Mumbai or Delhi. We confirm the current centre for your main destination before anything is booked.

We book the appointment, and tell you whether you need to attend at all — if your fingerprints were taken for a Schengen visa recently enough, you may be able to submit without appearing.

• Funds that do not credibly cover the trip, or a balance that appeared suddenly
• Insurance below €30,000, or not covering the full stay
• Bookings, itinerary and form that contradict each other
• No clear reason to return to India

Which Schengen country should I apply to?

The one where you will spend the most nights. If two are equal, the one you enter first.

Do Indians need a Schengen visa?

Yes. ETIAS is for visa-free nationalities and does not apply to Indian passport holders.

What does it cost?

There is a consular fee, reduced for children and waived for the youngest, plus the centre’s service charge and our fee. We give you the current figures in writing before you commit. The consular fee is not refunded if you are refused.

Can I get a five-year Schengen visa?

Possibly. If you have obtained and lawfully used two Schengen visas in the last three years, you are normally eligible for a two-year multi-entry visa and then a five-year one. We check your passport history at the assessment.

How early can I apply?

Up to six months before travel, and no later than 15 working days before. In peak season, start earlier — appointments run out before processing does.

Do I have to give fingerprints every time?

No. Biometrics are reused for a period, so repeat applicants can often submit without attending in person. We confirm whether you need to appear.

How much bank balance do I need?

No official minimum. Your funds should credibly cover your trip, with a steady six-month history.
