The US visa is the one where preparation changes the outcome — not because anyone can influence the decision, nobody can, but because it is the only visa we handle that turns on a conversation, and most people prepare the wrong things for it.
Chennai is a US consular post, so applicants across Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry interview here rather than travelling to Delhi or Mumbai — we confirm current jurisdiction at your assessment. Most people we see are visiting children in the US, attending a graduation, or travelling for client meetings.
We have prepared B1/B2 files from Chennai for ten years — over 2,000 applications, including many parents and grandparents who now have to attend an interview where they once used the dropbox. We know what the DS-160 asks that trips people up, and what a consular officer is listening for.
We are a private visa consultancy. We are not the US government, we cannot influence a decision, and we cannot attend your interview.
If someone in your family renewed a US visa a few years ago without attending an interview, do not assume you can do the same.
From 1 October 2025 the interview waiver narrowed sharply. To qualify now you generally must be renewing a visa that expired within the last 12 months — previously 48 — issued at full validity, when you were 18 or over, with no previous refusals, applying in your country of nationality. We confirm the exact current criteria with you at the assessment — this is a policy area that has already moved once and can move again.
The change that surprises Chennai families most: the age exemptions for under-14s and over-79s no longer exist. Grandparents who have visited family for twenty years, and young children added to a family trip, now attend in person.
Even meeting every condition does not guarantee a waiver — an officer can still call you in. And more people competing for slots means you should start earlier than you think.
Almost every website says “schedule your appointment”, as if there is one. There are two.
The biometrics appointment at the visa application centre — fingerprints and photograph. Short, administrative, no questions of substance.
The consular interview at the US Consulate General in Chennai, where the decision is made. A few minutes across a counter, in English or Tamil, with an officer who has your DS-160 open in front of them.
They are booked separately, and biometrics comes first. Getting the sequence wrong is a common and avoidable delay.
US law treats every visitor visa applicant as an intending immigrant until they demonstrate otherwise. That provision — section 214(b) — is the ground on which most B1/B2 refusals are issued, and the refusal slip usually says little more than that.
So the interview is not really about your documents. It is about whether your answers, your circumstances and your reason to return to India hold together in a couple of minutes.
What that means in practice:
Officers often ask for none of it. That is normal — the file supports your answers rather than replacing them.

Our US applications sit with Arun, Head of Visa Operations — over five years in visa documentation, and our B1/B2 specialist.
We settle the direction first. B1 or B2, who is travelling, and whether anyone in the group might still qualify for a waiver. That decision shapes the whole timeline.
We complete the DS-160 with you. It is long, and it is unforgiving — an inconsistent employment date or an unanswered travel-history question follows you into the interview room. This is where most avoidable damage is done, and where we spend the most time.
We book both appointments in the right order and tell you what to carry to each.
Arun prepares you for the interview himself. Not a script — a rehearsal. The questions officers actually ask, in the order they ask them, with honest feedback on answers that sound evasive or over-prepared. For parents and grandparents attending for the first time because of the rule change, this is the whole service.
We check your ties to India can be stated simply, and help you say them in one clear sentence.
We handle a previous refusal honestly. We look at what was asked, what was answered, and what has genuinely changed.
What we cannot do: attend your interview, influence the officer, obtain a slot that does not exist, or promise an outcome. Any agent claiming otherwise is selling something they do not control. The interview is yours — our job is that you walk in ready for it.
Tell us who is travelling and why. We will confirm whether anyone qualifies for a waiver, complete the DS-160 with you, book both appointments, and rehearse the interview before you go.
